What's the difference between Aero Kontiki and a torpedo watercraft Kontiki?

A conventional electric torpedo kontiki is a watercraft which needs to be placed into the water to operate. This will haul the line out, and stay out at sea until the line is ready to be pulled back. On the other hand, the Aero Kontiki is an aircraft which carries the baited long-line out, delivering it into the sea. The Aero Kontiki will immediately and autonomously fly itself back, leaving the low-value line in place to catch fish.

What are the advantages of the Aero Kontiki over a watercraft torpedo kontiki?

  1. The Aero Kontiki hauls the backbone line out quickly and cleanly. Baits are not "washed out” or spoiled, and they will release natural burley as soon as they are in the water.

  2. The baited long-line does not require a float nor a marker.

  3. The entire fishing process can be done without needing to enter the water thus fishing is totally dry, and much safer.

  4. The nylon backbone with the traces, baits, and sinker will sink to the sea bed. This will eliminate the risk of getting snagged by boats, swimmers, or torpedo kontikis & losing your kontiki, having it go off course, cut loose, or stolen.

  5. The speed that the line can be deployed means you can do drops using 16 baits every 30 minutes, rather than 25 baits every hour.

  6. You can catch what fish your need, and stop when you have enough.

  7. You can drop baits precisely at your favorite location every time.

Why does the Aero Kontiki cost as much as it does?

The Aero Kontiki uses the best systems available to ensure it has the power, thrust capability, hauling stability, and autonomous flight control to successfully deliver a beach long line under real beach and water current conditions. It uses systems which are used for aerial videography which are trusted to carry DSLR cameras costing thousands of dollars; And it's designed with quality in mind so that it can be used over and over again giving the user msny hours of recreational and fun fishing.

How is the Aero Kontiki different from a model or toy helicoptor?

The Aero Kontiki cannot be compared to aircraft models or toy helicoptors. It has been developed and produced specifically to haul a fishing beach long line with multple hooks.  It has special capabilities like stability, thrust power, telemetry and autonomous control to haul and deliver a 2kg baited beach long line 800 - 1000m into the sea. For your safety and the safety of others we do not recomend  that you try and haul a line with aircraft systems not designed with these capabilities.

Is the Aero Kontiki easy to fly?

The Aero Kontiki is much easier to fly then a toy helicopter, and does not require any special skills to operate. The on board flight controller takes care of the stabilization of the aircraft, leaving you to input basic joystick commands such as lifting up, changing direction, and moving forward. If the joysticks are released, they return to the centre position, and the Aero Kontiki immediately locks in the air, i.e., it stops moving, holds altitude and hovers.

Can the Aero Kontiki fall into the water?

The Aero Kontiki has been designed to fly reliably and to haul bait, and not to land on the sea or to float. The user needs to take all reasonable care to ensure it is operated correctly within its parameters, and must immediately respond to any battery telemetry warnings that are announced.

What happens if the long-line tangles or comes to a sudden stop?

The Aero Kontiki will still maintain flight stability if the long-line catches, or otherwise comes to a sudden stop for whatever reason. It will keep trying to pull the line until all joystick controls are released.

Will the Aero Kontiki work with standard electric winches which are used for torpedo kontikis.

  1. Currently the Aero Kontiki has the capability to haul a 170lb nylon backbone long-line with 10 baits. For thicker and stronger long-lines the drag in the water is considerable higher which requires the Aero Kontiki to work harder. Tests are being planned for reputable brands of electric fishing winches to assess if the Aero Kontiki can haul nylon up to 300lb breaking strength.

  2. Another consideration is if the winch has a free- spooling mechanism. The Aero Kontiki pulls out the line at  a very high speed, so a little resistance is required to ensure there are no over-runs, but not too much resistance. This also will be tested in the near future.
